Temporary Status
- If someone comes to the US, but not permanently
- Will only need visa if not from allied country
- Must fulfill a specific purpose (i.e. job, education)
- Can be deported if they don't meet their goal
- Will be sent back when their status expires unless there's a humanitarian crisis in their country
- 30 million temporary immigrants per year
Permanent Residence
- Need a green card
- Get most rights of citizens except for voting
- Can still be deported for some high crimes
- 53% of permanent residents are not citizens
Naturalized Residence
- When a permanent resident takes the Oath of Allegiance they are considered to be naturalized
- Have all the rights of a US citizen except for becoming president
- 47% of immigrants are naturalized
- Pathway to citizenship is the project to ease the naturalization process
Undocumented
- When someone crosses the border without documentation
- About 11 million undocumented in the US
- Mostly caused by the difficult immigration process
- Some do bring crime though
- Many want them deported
